COVID-19 Theme

The photo image that is the basis for this year’s HSCSS T-shirts shows a stand of giant saguaros, Carnegia gigantica, on the Vineyard Trail above the southwest side of Theodore Roosevelt Lake in Arizona.

The image – from John Crossley (https://www.americansouthwest.net) – conveys the natural spacing characteristic that saguaros exhibit in habitat. This allows them to maintain root systems that support the plants and adequately share required water.

This spacing trait is a natural fit with the now-usual conditions of life with social distancing in 2020.

Theodore Roosevelt Lake is within the Tonto National Forest about 80 miles northeast of Phoenix. The lake is formed by a dam on the Salt River that holds a reservoir as a water supply for the city. The light-colored stripe in the background of the picture is a segment of the scenic Apache Trail, a well-known landmark in the region.
